Medicare in Sugar Land

What Sugar Land residents should know

Sugar Land is the largest city in Fort Bend County, and three health systems run hospitals there. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital opened in 1998 on the Southwest Freeway and now runs heart, cancer, neuroscience and orthopedic centers. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital sits on the Grand Parkway with an emergency center and heart and vascular care. St. Luke's Hospital - Sugar Land is on Lake Pointe Parkway, in the medical cluster near the city's Town Center.

Three systems in one city makes the network question sharp. A Medicare Advantage HMO may include Houston Methodist and leave out Memorial Hermann, or the other way around. Some plans are built around a single medical group, such as Kelsey-Seybold. Before you enroll, look up your family doctor, every specialist and the hospital you would want in an emergency. Confirm each one is in network for next year, not just this year.

If you would rather not track networks, a Medicare Supplement lets you see any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. Plan G covers nearly everything after the Part B deductible. Plan N has a lower premium and small copays. Either one pairs with a separate Part D plan, so we also check your drugs against each plan's list and your pharmacy.

Fort Bend County has no hospital district of its own, and OakBend Medical Center serves as the county's contracted charity hospital. For daily help, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels delivers free meals to homebound older adults and runs senior centers around the county. The city's T.E. Harman Center hosts programs for adults over 50. The Sugar Land Branch Library on Eldridge Road has free computers for Medicare.gov tasks.

Common questions

Medicare questions from Sugar Land

Can one plan cover Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann and St. Luke's in Sugar Land?
Some Advantage networks include more than one system and some include only one. Look up each hospital and doctor by name. A Medicare Supplement works with any of them that accept Medicare.
Is Kelsey-Seybold in every Medicare Advantage plan?
No. Some plans are built around specific medical groups and others leave them out. If you see a Kelsey-Seybold doctor, confirm that doctor is in network for the plan year before you enroll.
