Costly Medicare Errors Houston Seniors Make

Sit at enough kitchen tables from Kingwood to Missouri City and the same short list repeats. Hardly any of it comes from picking a bad plan. It comes from a missed date, a lazy assumption, or a choice made off a glossy mailer.

These are the seven worth guarding against.

  • Most of these stick permanently
  • One annual review prevents almost all of them
  • Blown dates hurt worse than a bad plan

The big ones

Seven errors with a real price tag

  • 1. Blowing the Part B window

No active employer plan and a late Part B signup means a surcharge you carry for life. Our Part B penalty calculator shows the damage in about ten seconds.
  • 2. Skipping Part D while healthy

An empty medicine cabinet today changes nothing. Go 63 days without creditable drug coverage and a permanent surcharge attaches to every future premium.
  • 3. Assuming your network held

Houston hospital contracts get renegotiated every year. Recheck your doctors each fall instead of trusting what was true last October.
  • 4. Shopping the premium alone

A zero premium plan with your drugs on tier 4 can cost thousands more per year than a plan with a modest monthly bill.
  • 5. Letting the Medigap clock run out

Your guaranteed issue window opens with Part B and shuts six months later. After that, Texas carriers get to ask about your health history.
  • 6. Enrolling off a TV commercial

A national call center sells the same plan in every state. Nobody there can tell you whether it works at Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann, or Kelsey-Seybold.

7. Setting it and forgetting it

This one costs the most. Every plan changes on January 1. Fifteen minutes each fall during Open Enrollment usually catches it.

Also worth knowing

Quieter slips we fix all the time

Somebody buys a standalone Part D plan while holding an Advantage plan that already includes drugs, and the purchase kicks them out of the Advantage plan. Somebody drops Medigap expecting to walk back in, then fails underwriting. Somebody never mentions a spouse still working at a Ship Channel plant, and a Special Enrollment Period goes unused.

None of it is exotic. It is detail work, which is the whole reason to use a local independent agent. New to this? Read the Medicare overview and work through the Medicare checklist.

Think one of these already happened?

Plenty of it is fixable if we catch it early. Call for a free review and nobody will lecture you.
