What Kingwood residents should know
Kingwood started in 1971 as a planned community known as the Livable Forest, and the City of Houston annexed it in 1996. Most of its villages are in Harris County. A small part, served by New Caney schools, is in Montgomery County. If you live there, your Medicare Advantage options follow Montgomery County, even with a Kingwood address.
HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, on Highway 59, is the main hospital. It has more than 450 beds, a Level II trauma center, a Comprehensive Stroke Center and an accredited chest pain center. Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital is south in Humble. Harris Health's nearest public hospital is Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in northeast Houston. If you also see specialists in the Texas Medical Center, add them to your list.
An Advantage HMO may include HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood and not Memorial Hermann Northeast, or the reverse. Check both, plus each doctor, by name. A Medicare Supplement works with any provider who accepts Medicare, which helps if you split care between Kingwood and the Medical Center. Many residents remember Hurricane Harvey flooding in 2017. Keep your plan card and drug list somewhere you can grab in a hurry.
Because Kingwood is inside Houston, METRO serves it with a Park & Ride lot. Riders 70 and older ride free with a RideMETRO Discount Fare Card, and riders 65 to 69 pay half fare. METROLift serves riders whose disability keeps them from using the regular bus. The Kingwood Branch Library on Bens View Lane has free computers for Medicare.gov tasks. The Harris County Area Agency on Aging offers benefits counseling at 832-393-4301.
